The organization’s core mission is to support young girls from extremely poor, single-parent families to become independent, successful individuals. Their scholarship program is targeted at those girls who, in spite of negative socio-economic factors placed on them, are capable of achieving their full potential.
Much of the work that the organization does relies on charitable contributions and donations to cover their yearly expenses and running costs. They set up a USA based organization, based in Oregon, that has 501 status with its own board of directors. As a marketing and fundraising intern, you’ll work directly with the USA board members and the program director to help design and implement an effective marketing and fundraising strategy to raise vital funds for the NGO.

ORGANIZATION
Chaska is a psychology-based program that works to break the cycle of poverty and gender inequality across Cusco, Peru. Girls from extremely poor, single-parent families who demonstrate great potential are identified through in-depth interviews and psychological testing and are selected to join the program each year. The program is built upon three pillars of support: financial, educational, and emotional; through assisting with extra classes, delivering workshops on key social issues, as well as providing healthy meals and other financial support, this nonprofit helps the girls gain the tools to thrive as healthy, independent and successful individuals.
TASKS & REQUIREMENTS
As a marketing and fundraising intern, you’ll work closely with board members of Chaska USA to plan and implement effective marketing and fundraising strategies. Your main goal will be to promote their work both locally and globally, connecting the organization with crucial support and raising awareness in the community of the region. This may involve heading up your own fundraising initiatives, helping to make strategic decisions regarding budgeting, creating content for social media and other online platforms, or expanding partnerships with supporting organizations.
You’ll be based in Cusco, Peru’s oldest inhabited city nestled within the Andean mountains, where you’ll be mentored by the program director, as well as given the opportunity to devise and lead your own projects.
What you’ll do
The key tasks for interns in this program will be:
- Work directly with the program director and the USA board members to promote the organization’s work
- Plan and implement effective marketing, fundraising, and communication strategies
- Assist in areas such as website design and social media content creation
- Help make strategic decisions regarding budget
- Carry out fundraising research (e.g. looking for funding opportunities and partnerships), help prepare/write funding proposals and grant applications
- Communicate with various donors to elevate the organization’s profile and raise vital funds
- There is lots of space for personal initiatives, as long as they are in line with the program’s objectives
Requirements
- Education or background in marketing, fundraising, and communications, or a subject-related field
- A passion for community development and education
- Independent, proactive, creative thinker
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Good understanding of English, Dutch or, Spanish
- Must be over 20 years of age
- Minimum commitment of 8 weeks (may be completed in Cusco or remotely if preferred)
WHERE YOU’LL STAY
Interns stay in one of two apartments, each with three bedrooms. Each apartment has a well-equipped kitchen where interns can prepare and eat meals together (there is also the option to eat a nutritious, homemade lunch with the girls), a living area, and a shared bathroom, and come with electricity, WiFi, and filtered drinking water. The apartments are located in a safe area of Cusco, South America’s oldest inhabited city, steeped in culture and tradition.
The city, famed as the gateway to the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, is a wonderful melting pot of Incan majesty, Andean baroque, and a cosmopolitan shopping and eating scene. With endless temples and ruins to explore, quaint cobblestone streets lined with textile boutiques, and traditionally-dressed women walking their pet llamas, your senses will be heightened at every turn.

- Drinks, snacks, and items of personal nature (f.e. curios, gifts, clothing)
- Costs for additional excursions or activities
