Doing an internship in Africa is a big step, and there are many things to consider; how to find the internship that matches your study focus and interests, how to apply for your dream internship, and how to prepare for your African adventure. What does my fee cover for?

The placement fee covers the time and admin involved in finding you the right internship, processing your booking, helping you prepare for your experience, and assisting you on the ground. The accommodation fee comes on top of this and gives you a choice of comfortable and central places to stay at market-related rates.

Can I do an NGO internship in Africa at any skill level?

Yes. We offer internships and volunteer jobs at a variety of skill levels. Some internships don’t require too much experience, others require a very specific skill-set. We’ll be happy to help you find something that matches your interests and experience perfectly.

What if I can’t find the internship I’m looking for?

Give us a shout and we’re happy to see if we can tailor-make something for you! Besides the listed internships, we regularly design nonprofit internships in Africa for people with specific work experience and knowledge. We want to make sure you’ll be able to use your skills in the best possible way.

Is it safe to travel to Africa on my own?

We only offer internships in places where there are no particular safety risks. Obviously, it’s good to be cautious wherever you travel to, and we’ll make sure to brief you properly on how to stay safe at all times.

What kind of accommodation do you provide?

The accommodation we offer varies; we offer both shared and single rooms in apartments, houses, and backpackers. We realize that everyone has different needs when it comes to their living quarters, and are excited to be able to offer different options.

How do I get a visa for my internship in Africa?

This depends on your nationality and where you’re traveling to, but we’ll be able to give you guidelines and point you in the right direction for arranging the right visa. Please give yourself at least three months to make the necessary arrangements.

Will there be other interns?

Yes! Most organizations take more than one intern, but even if you’re the only person at your placement, there will be other Roots interns around – usually either at your accommodation or in the same office space. We’ll make sure to provide a network for socializing.

Will I get free time?

Absolutely! At most internship placements, you’ll work standard working hours, leaving weekends to relax and explore your surroundings. But there are always options for taking some time off for some extra travel adventures and leisure time.

Most of our internships are in Cape Town. Known as the ‘Mother City,’ Cape Town is a city with endless intrigue and opportunities. Can I get university credits for my NGO internship in Africa?

Yes, depending on the requirements by your course, it’s possible to get credit for your internship. We’ll work with you to find you the right internship, fill out any paperwork, and make any necessary adjustments to meet your university’s requirements. Just get in touch to discuss the options!
