Why Choose Roots Internships in Fundraising
Find out from our previous interns how internship positions in Fundraising can boost your professional career and grow your interpersonal skills.
I raised money for an environmental nonprofit which they can use to finance their many amazing projects. It makes me proud to see that people donated money specifically because of my campaign. Secondly, I could really see and feel my impact during the Festival of Action, a yearly tree-planting event that is organized and put on by the nonprofit. It is one thing to approach people and ask them to donate for tree planting projects, but it is another thing to be planting the trees yourself! This was a powerful experience which made me realize my impact on the earth in that specific moment.
Harold, Neoma Business School, French – Business Development and Fundraising Internship, South Africa
This internship has exceeded my expectations as I wanted to learn about how a nonprofit functions and acquires funding / financial support and I learned a ton about nonprofit work and the difficulties of it. I wrote two applications for grants, wrote a newsletter that was released to our entire community, helped my supervisors decide on a logo, ran their social media platform for the summer, and many other tasks in between! The most important thing I learned was about the culture and people of Malawi. I was able to talk to multiple Malawian community members, teachers, and club leaders. Creating connections with people there meant the most to me because, with a virtual internship, I didn’t know if I’d be able to connect with the people or learn about the culture. Putting in effort to learn about Malawi was the most rewarding aspect for me.
I have enjoyed the past few months learning from an experienced fundraising professional, coming to understand the nuances of proposal writing, prospect research and funder engagement strategies. I am proud to say that I wrote 15 proposals on behalf of NGOs in Kenya, South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe, totaling approximately $600,000 in total requested funding. This internship absolutely met my expectations and then some – it gave me a legitimate skillset that I can leverage in pursuit of future opportunities in the international development industry.
