Why Choose Roots Internships in Ghana

We can give you several reasons why you should join Roots for an internship, but also find out from our previous interns how internship positions in Ghana can boost your professional career and grow your interpersonal skills.

Amazing remote internship experience. I learned so much about the organization. My supervisor was very hands-on from day one and because of my gained experience I am more comfortable in my writing abilities and social media content creating and managing skills. I wish I could’ve done the internship in person but Isaac made me feel right at home. Our youth are our present and future. The internship has and will continue to help with my writing/journalism side ventures and my career in ethnography. I have improved my skills and gained confidence through experience.

Safety and Support

Throughout your internship abroad we’re here to support you. Ghana is generally considered safe for travelers, with a lower crime rate compared to many other countries in the region. Accra, the capital, maintains a reputation for safety. However, like in any urban area, petty crimes such as pickpocketing and scams can occur, particularly in crowded places. Travelers should exercise common-sense precautions, like safeguarding belongings and avoiding poorly lit areas at night. Additionally, Ghana’s friendly and welcoming culture contributes to its overall safety for tourists, but it’s wise to stay informed about local conditions and adhere to local advice for a trouble-free experience.

Ghana Travel Requirements

  • Visa – You are permitted to complete an unpaid internship on a tourist visa in Ghana, however these only last 30 days. Typically, it is fairly straightforward to extend these locally for up to three months. For internships longer than three months, you will likely need a long-term visa, which may require a sponsorship letter from your host organization and compliance with Ghanaian immigration regulations. Applications can be lengthy so start the procedure well in advance of departure.
  • Travel Insurance – You want to have a carefree experience during your internship abroad, so it’s important to get the right travel insurance; a package that is suited for your upcoming trip. Check out our page with more information on flights and insurance.
  • Police Clearance / Background Check – This is a standard policy for most of our internships, as you are often working with vulnerable individuals. The procedure on how to obtain a police clearance/background check varies per country.
  • Vaccinations – Recommended vaccinations include yellow fever, hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and routine shots. Malaria prophylaxis, safe drinking water practices, and proper hygiene precautions are also crucial. As always, we recommend consulting a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
