Gain a wealth of work experience during this marketing and fundraising internship! It’s a wonderful opportunity to be part of a sports-focused nonprofit based in Ghana – either on the ground or remotely – and to contribute to this cause on a strategic level.

You’ll join the Impact Youth Foundation, a charity that offers sports coaching and mentorship to young people in rural Ghana. As a marketing and fundraising intern, you’ll have the opportunity to take on a range of different tasks, based on your skills and experience. This can include doing fundraising research, applying for grants, assisting with monitoring and evaluation of the programs, and assisting with the overall development of the different systems and programs. You might also help develop and implement communication strategies, and assist with website development.

It’s a great opportunity for someone keen to have a hugely varied work experience, to assist with the development and sustainability of an inspiring program, and to gain insights into the nonprofit landscape.

ORGANIZATION

The Impact Youth Foundation is a nonprofit organization that offers sports coaching in a rural community in Ghana. The nonprofit uses sports – particularly basketball – as a tool for equipping young people with relevant life skills, and allowing at-risk youth to pursue successful careers. Through their different programs, Impact Youth provides mentoring to talented kids, as well as sports classes for the community at large, in an effort to encourage healthy living and boost confidence in kids. In addition, they offer vocational training and apprenticeships to equip young people with employability skills.

The Impact Youth Foundation is based in a village on the outskirts of Accra, Ghana’s capital. Most sports training happens there, though the organization also runs sports programs in Accra and Kumasi.

Generally, Ghana is a friendly country. Bearing this in mind, you should always be aware that tourists are targets for pickpockets and thieves in any country so it’s important to be vigilant and use common sense to stay safe.

Consult your doctor to find out which vaccinations you will need to travel to Ghana. Some vaccinations require a longer incubation period, so it is wise to schedule your visit 2-3 months in advance. You will also be recommended to take anti-malaria tablets, which you will most likely need to start taking prior to your trip departure.

The apartment options all offer Wifi access so you can stay connected while at your accommodation. For full-time network access, you can use your current mobile phone plan in Ghana if you enable international roaming or a cheaper alternative is to buy a local SIM card, if your phone is unlocked for international carriers. You can go to most neighborhood shops with your passport to buy a local SIM card along with airtime and/or a data bundle.

REVIEWS

“Amazing remote internship experience. I learned so much about the organization. My supervisor was very hands-on from day one and because of my gained experience I am more comfortable in my writing abilities and social media content creating and managing skills. I wish I could’ve done the internship in person but Isaac made me feel right at home. Our youth are our present and future. The internship has and will continue to help with my writing/journalism side ventures and my career in ethnography. I have improved my skills and gained confidence through experience.”
