Safety and Support

Throughout your internship abroad we’re here to support you. For travel and internships, Spain is generally considered a safe destination. It has a low crime rate compared to many other countries, and violent crime is relatively rare. However, like any other destination, it’s important to be aware of potential safety concerns and take precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Barcelona Travel Requirements

  • Visa – If you are a citizen of an EU or EEA country, you do not need a Visa to enter and do internships. Spain has a very strict policy, so if you are not a citizen from one of those countries, you will need to apply for a Schengen Visa.
  • Travel Insurance – You want to have a carefree experience during your internship abroad, so it’s important to get the right travel insurance; a package that is suited for your upcoming trip. Check out our page with more information on flights and insurance.
  • Police Clearance / Background Check – This is a standard policy for most of our internships, as you are often working with vulnerable individuals. The procedure on how to obtain a police clearance/background check varies per country.
  • Vaccinations – Getting the country’s recommended vaccinations is important when doing an abroad internship. Spain generally recommends the following vaccines: routine vaccines, COVID-19, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, measles, and rabies.

Is it safe to do an internship in Spain?

For internships, Spain is widely known to be a safe destination. It is a well-developed country with a low overall crime rate compared to other countries. Despite this, it is still necessary that you take necessary precautions such as knowing emergency numbers, being vigilant with your belongings, and learning about Spain’s cultural norms.

Do I need to speak Spanish to be an intern in Spain?

While most internships in Spain can be done just by communicating in English, some of them may require you to be able to communicate effectively in Spanish. There are multiple courses that you can take by yourself, or with the organization that you intern in.

What are the living costs in Spain?

he cost of living in Spain can vary significantly depending on the city or region you choose to live in. Generally, Spain offers a relatively affordable cost of living compared to many other Western European countries, but expenses can still vary widely. For example, rent for a one-bedroom apartment could cost you between €600 and €1,200 per month, while groceries for one person could be between €150 and €250 per month, but, once again, this varies by city. Keep in mind that most of our Spain internships are in Barcelona, so the living costs will most likely be on the expensive side.

When should I start planning my internship in Spain?

We recommend you to start planning your internship at least 3 months in advance just so you can get all your official documents organized, your flights booked, your accommodation arranged, and have all the necessary vaccinations for your internship in Spain.

How do I apply for an internship in Spain?

You can browse through all our offered opportunities for internships in Spain (this is a relatively new location for us, so there are a limited number of opportunities). Once you find the one that suits your interests, you can apply by filling out the application form online. After we have revised your application, we will contact you in order to schedule an online interview to give us a better idea of your internship goals. You will also be able to ask any questions that you may have. If everything goes well, we’ll send your application to the host organization.
