Sales & Marketing Coordinator

Your tasks and responsibilities

  • Marketing & Communications:
    • Creating internship listings on university websites
    • Managing website, social media channels and our blog
    • Sending out newsletters
    • Managing partnerships with universities
    • Managing marketing / communications interns at Roots (we generally have one intern in our team)
  • Sales / Service:
    • Managing enquiries, bookings and placements
    • Facilitating the screening and matching process through interviews
    • Managing of interns on the ground (including airport transfers, check-ins, feedback, etc)
  • Administration:
    • Manage finance admin
    • Manage all booking systems
    • Create monthly reports to the Directors

Skills / Experience required

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Excellent coordination and project management skills
  • Planning and time management skills
  • At least 3 years experience in sales and/or marketing
  • Great people skills and a passion for offering people an amazing internship experience
  • A passion for assisting worthwhile do-good organisations
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work fairly independently
  • Solution based, creative and forward thinking
  • Adaptable to a fast moving and changing environment as well as different people, companies and ways of working
  • Eligible to work in South Africa (South African citizen or valid work visa)

ZAR 12,000 – 15,000, depending on experience

Marketing and Communications Intern

Your role

Roots is a young organisation, and as an intern, you can be a vital part of many aspects of our development. While a majority of the tasks are related to communications, but you can be involved marketing and strategy of Roots as well. In addition it will be an opportunity for you to interact with and learn about other grassroots charities and the interns volunteering with them. We can adjust tasks to your skills, interests and experience. Your tasks can involve the following:

  • Doing marketing research
  • Doing SEO analysis & helping design SEO strategy
  • Helping develop social media and (content) marketing strategy
  • Posting on social media (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)
  • Writing blogs
  • Learning and writing about the work our non-profit partners are doing
  • Interact with interns placed with our partners to collect content about their experiences, work of the organizations and impact they are making


  • Strong English writing skills
  • Interest/passion for creating content (on social media and blog)
  • Some experience with social media and/or marketing is beneficial
  • An ability to work quite independently
  • Your own laptop

This internship is based on a volunteer work experience, so you won’t receive a stipend

Start date and working hours
June/July 2019, Mon-Fri from 9-17. Minimum duration: 3 months
