Lea, France Social Entrepreneurship internship, Nkhata Bay
As Nkhata Bay has such a diverse range of projects, I assist in a variety of tasks. I have taken on email campaigns, newsletters, social media posting, fundraising, grant research and writing, comprising an overall communications map and strategy, writing website copy, and doing project visits and assessments. I’ve also set up Google Analytics, I’ve done bartending training, and I have assisted on the ground work with certain projects. There is definitely always something to do whether it be for the lodge directly or a specific program.
Despite working from home due the Covid-19 pandemic, I learnt many new things and was especially pleased about the practical application of many aspects I had been taught about at university. While I would have preferred to travel to Malawi, I did manage to gain in-depth insight into the way an NGO works and what the particular challenges in this particular case are.

MALAWI FAQS
Where will I stay during my internship in Malawi?
If you are a vet student heading to Lilongwe for our Veterinary Wildlife Internship, you’ll stay on-site at the wildlife center in their volunteer housing facility that provides vegan/vegetarian meals, shared and private rooms, and communal working and relaxing spaces all surrounded by nature in the big city.
For all other NGO internship options, you’ll stay at a nonprofit ecolodge on the banks of Lake Malawi in the northern town of Nkhata Bay. With views of palm trees and green-blue water, this lodge has an idyllic location and a relaxed vibe. You’ll enjoy a private beach, beautiful gardens, a beach bar, and several communal spaces. The rooms are comfortable dormitories, although there are options of upgrading to single chalets, too. The lodge is a hub for people who are volunteering their time at different community and environmental projects in the area, so you can expect to share this gorgeous space with like-minded people.
Is it safe to do a student internship in Malawi?
Yes! As long as you’re aware of your surroundings, educate yourself on recommended precautions, and use good common sense. Don’t forget, you’ll be living in volunteer hubs that are experienced in hosting overseas travelers of all ages and experiences, so you’ll be in good hands.
What are the living costs in Malawi?
It depends, of course, on how many extra activities you do and souvenirs you buy, but you can get an estimate of the total cost of the internship based on the “fees” that are noted in the listing. Local meals cost around $2 and day trips range between $10-50 depending on the activity. Keep in mind, accommodations costs and a one month food package are included in the fees, so you don’t have to budget for that!
When should I start planning my internship in Malawi?
The sooner the better! It’s good to give yourself enough time to plan your travels, apply for your visa if you need one, receive any required vaccinations, and get fully organized. We recommend starting the process at least 6 months ahead of time, however, we’re always happy to find you something last minute, if needed!
