PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Be a part of the wildlife research program in Malawi’s Liwonde National Park to contribute to conservation through data collection and species monitoring while working alongside expert researchers in a biodiverse ecosystem.

Participants play an essential role in ongoing conservation efforts, collecting crucial data on species such as lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and vultures. Through fieldwork, tracking, and habitat assessments, they help develop conservation strategies that protect Malawi’s rich biodiversity.

This program is designed for those passionate about wildlife research and conservation. Participants work with experienced researchers using VHF radio tracking, camera trapping, and observational techniques to study animal behavior and ecological dynamics. The experience offers an in-depth understanding of field research methodologies and the challenges of wildlife conservation.

ORGANIZATION

You’ll join a wildlife conservation organization that is based in Lilongwe, Malawi. This nonprofit is dedicated to protecting local wildlife, and they do this through a number of programs, including;

  • The rescuing of injured wildlife and rehabilitation. Where possible, the wildlife is released back into the wild – otherwise they are looked after in the organization’s wildlife sanctuary.
  • Conducting research in Liwonde National Park.
  • Campaigning against illegal wildlife trade, poaching, and other issues that are threatening wildlife.
  • Educating local communities about the importance of their habitat and its many wildlife species.
  • Lobbying with policy makers for wildlife protection.

TASKS & REQUIreMENTS

During this Wildlife Research program, you’ll gain experience in a variety of research tasks include species monitoring, habitat assessment, and data management. While prior experience in conservation is beneficial, a passion for wildlife and research is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Manage camera traps to capture wildlife movement
  • Identify and record animal behavior and interactions
  • Assist in habitat and biodiversity assessments
  • Conduct VHF radio tracking to monitor individual animals
  • Analyze and compile collected research data
  • Participate in field excursions for conservation studies
  • Engage in environmental sustainability initiatives
  • Contribute to ongoing conservation projects in Malawi

  • Comfortable with early mornings and long days in the field

WHERE YOU’LL STAY

You’ll stay on-site the research camp with shared accommodation in Liwonde National Park, including single beds and mosquito nets in a simple yet comfortable setting. It features flush toilets, hot showers, a communal kitchen for self-catered vegetarian/vegan meals, and a fire area for evening gatherings. While there is no Wifi, mobile network coverage is available for those who purchase a data plan, and all participants receive a local SIM card for communication.

Make sure to visit your doctor and dentist for a check-up before traveling and to get all the recommended vaccines and/or medications necessary to stay healthy. The organization requires you to take a TB test (and receive a negative test result) as even if you have been vaccinated against TB, you may still be a carrier of the disease and pass it onto the animals. You will be provided with a mosquito net, but if you are choosing to take any malaria prophylaxis (recommended), you will need to obtain these before arrival.

Living on an African wildlife park requires following strict safety guidelines, respecting both animals and nature to minimize risks.

Upon arrival, the organization will provide you with a local SIM card. Ensure that your phone is unlcoked for international carriers, prior to arrival, or consider purchasing a global e-SIM. There is no Wifi at the research camp, but mobile network coverage is available.

Meals are not prepared for participants at Liwonde National Park, however, vegetarian/vegan ingredients will be provided for you to cook. Meals can be prepared individually or shared communally, depending on group preferences. When staying at the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, an on-site chef prepares daily meals.

Liwonde National Park, one of Malawi’s premier wildlife reserves, is home to diverse ecosystems and iconic species. The park is known for its large elephant and rhino populations, scenic Shire River floodplains, and predator-prey interactions, making it a key site for conservation research.

Inclusions

  • Careful matchmaking. It takes time to find the right opportunity for each person, and we take this process very seriously.
  • Initial interview with one of our team to gauge your skills, interests, and desired learning outcomes.
  • Shared accommodation in Liwonde (max. 5 participants across three rooms: 1, 2, & 2 beds), all equipped with mosquito nets and bedding. Rooms are same-sex unless a private room is booked (additional rates apply, please get in touch for availability).
  • Airport transfers from Lilongwe on arrival (Tuesdays) and departure
  • First-night stay at the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre before traveling to Liwonde to reduce travel fatigue
  • All placement-related transport
  • Self-catering with provided vegetarian/vegan ingredients; meals prepared individually or communally
  • Unlimited tea, coffee, and filtered water
  • Local SIM card for communication

  • Tour of Lilongwe City (depending on departure schedule)

Exclusions

  • Flights to Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe
  • Visa and medical/travel insurance costs for the duration of your placement – must include cover for repatriation
  • Required vaccinations, including TB scans and malaria prophylaxis
  • Drinks, snacks, and items of personal nature (f.e. curios, gifts, clothing)
  • Additional tours or safaris outside the program itinerary

What can I expect from an internship in Malawi?

How long can I do an internship in Malawi?

The minimum length of our internships in Malawi is two months, but the ideal length is closer to four months, if possible. This ensures you have an adequate amount of time to make a tangible impact. Luckily, the length of our programs is customizable so you can apply for a summer, remote, hybrid, or gap-year internship!

Can I get university credit for an internship in Malawi?

Yes, but you must ensure with your supervisor that your university approves this. You can also purchase transfer credits to add onto your internship experience.

How can I prepare for an internship in Malawi?

Will I receive a stipend during my Roots internship?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to receive any kind of stipend while interning for a nonprofit organization. Your internship will be unpaid so we’ve put together a few tips on how to fund your internship. There will be opportunities for professional and personal growth and you’ll leave with a wealth of knowledge that is invaluable!
