Marketing and Fundraising Internship in Ghana

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Contribute to the development and sustainability of an inspiring nonprofit organization

Gain a wealth of work experience during this marketing and fundraising internship! It’s a wonderful opportunity to be part of a sports-focused nonprofit based in Ghana – either on the ground or remotely – and to contribute to this cause on a strategic level.

You’ll join the Impact Youth Foundation, a charity that offers sports coaching and mentorship to young people in rural Ghana. Through sports coaching, the Impact Youth programs teach life skills, nurture talent, and boost confidence in kids that need it. As a marketing and fundraising intern, you’ll have the opportunity to take on a range of different tasks, based on your skills and experience. This can include doing fundraising research, applying for grants, assisting with monitoring and evaluation of the programs, and assisting with the overall development of the different systems and programs. You might also help develop and implement communication strategies, and assist with website development.

It’s a great opportunity for someone keen to have a hugely varied work experience, to assist with the development and sustainability of an inspiring program, and to gain insights into the nonprofit landscape.

ORGANIZATION

The Impact Youth Foundation is a nonprofit organization that offers sports coaching in a rural community in Ghana. The nonprofit uses sports – particularly basketball – as a tool for equipping young people with relevant life skills, and allowing at-risk youth to pursue successful careers. Through their different programs, Impact Youth provides mentoring to talented kids, as well as sports classes for the community at large, in an effort to encourage healthy living and boost confidence in kids. In addition, they offer vocational training and apprenticeships to equip young people with employability skills.

The Impact Youth Foundation is based in a village on the outskirts of Accra, Ghana’s capital. Most sports training happens there, though the organization also runs sports programs in Accra and Kumasi.

Safety & Support

Safety & Support

Generally, Ghana is a friendly country. Bearing this in mind, you should always be aware that tourists are targets for pickpockets and thieves in any country so it’s important to be vigilant and use common sense to stay safe.

Consult your doctor to find out which vaccinations you will need to travel to Ghana. Some vaccinations require a longer incubation period, so it is wise to schedule your visit 2-3 months in advance. You will also be recommended to take anti-malaria tablets, which you will most likely need to start taking prior to your trip departure.

Communication

Communication

Both lodging options offer Wifi access, so you can stay connected while at your accommodation. For full-time network access, you can use your current mobile phone plan in Ghana if you enable international roaming or a cheaper alternative is to buy a local SIM card, if your phone is unlocked for international carriers. You can go to most neighborhood shops with your passport to buy a local SIM card along with airtime and/or a data bundle.

Meals

Meals

As you will be staying in a self-catering apartment, you will need to budget and plan time to do your own grocery shopping and cooking. Each apartment is equipped with a fully-functioning kitchen including a fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, and basic cooking utensils. There are also plenty of restaurant choices around Accra to eat out at.

If you choose the homestay option, you will receive breakfast & dinner daily. You can prepare your own lunch before heading to the project, or eat at local spots nearby.

SCHOLARSHIP & FUNDING

What can I expect from an internship in Ghana?

During your internship in Ghana you will have the opportunity to work on real-world projects, collaborate with diverse teams, develop new skills, improve your problem-solving abilities, and strengthen your teamwork and communication skills. You’ll also be able to create a strong, professional network of people with various backgrounds.

Is it expensive to do an internship in Ghana?

No, not by Western standards. The cost of living is significantly lower than Western cities. However, the major development in the capital city, Accra, has caused the costs to rise in recent years compared to other destinations in Africa.

Can I receive university credit for an internship in Ghana?

Yes, but you must ensure with your university that your supervisor approves this. It is also possible to purchase transfer credits that can be added to your internship.

Am I able to receive a stipend during my internship?

Unfortunately, you will not be able to receive any form of compensation. Your internship will be unpaid while working with the nonprofit organization, so we’ve included some ways to fund your internship here. The chances for professional and personal growth, along with the wealth of new knowledge you’ll gain, are invaluable!

REVIEWS

I had an amazing remote internship experience and I learned so much about the nonprofit space. My supervisor was very hands-on from day one and because of the working experience I gained, I am more comfortable in my writing abilities, social media content creating, and managing skills. I wish I could’ve done the internship in person but my superivsor made me feel right at home, even though I was miles away. The internship has and will continue to help with my writing/journalism side ventures and my career in ethnography. I have improved my skills and gained confidence through experience. I will continue to spread the overall mission of the organization: our youth are our present and our future.
