Help expand access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene while strengthening community health in Uganda
This WASH Internship in Uganda offers hands-on experience supporting community-driven solutions that improve household water, sanitation, and hygiene practices. Interns will work alongside local partners to conduct baseline assessments of WASH conditions, assist with basic data collection, and help design and implement hygiene promotion campaigns in schools and households. Through this work, interns in Uganda gain practical exposure to public health programming while contributing to efforts that reduce water-borne disease and build stronger, healthier communities.
Beyond daily project activities, WASH interns will deepen their understanding of how water access, sanitation, energy use, and health intersect in rural contexts. You’ll have opportunities to travel to nearby communities, engage with local leaders and families, and see firsthand how culturally grounded solutions drive behavior change. The experience combines meaningful fieldwork with personal exploration – allowing you to immerse yourself in Ugandan culture, landscapes, and community life while building skills relevant to careers in environmental health, international development, and WASH programming.

TASKS & REQUIreMENTS
Responsibilities within this WASH Internship in Uganda will vary based on an intern’s goals, academic background, and interests, as well as the evolving needs of the organization and its current WASH projects.
What You’ll Do
- Conduct household WASH assessments and support baseline data collection
- Assist with community outreach and hygiene education activities
- Co-develop and deliver hygiene promotion campaigns in schools and households
- Facilitate participatory discussions on water, sanitation, and health practices
- Document improvements in community water access and sanitation infrastructure
- Track behavior change indicators and assist with simple monitoring activities
- Collaborate with local staff and community leaders on project activities
- Travel to rural communities to observe and support WASH initiatives in the field
Requirements
- Background in WASH, environmental health, public health, or a related field
- Be comfortable with community outreach, basic data collection, and facilitation
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and adaptability in rural and cross-cultural settings
- Be willing to travel to rural sites and work in field conditions

WHERE YOU’LL STAY
Interns will live with a welcoming Ugandan host family as part of their placement, with their own lockable room furnished with basic essentials. Living with the family provides a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in daily Ugandan life, from shared meals to local routines and traditions. Most families will hand-wash your laundry, though interns are responsible for washing undergarments and delicate items. Bucket baths are common, with hot or cold water depending on the household, and occasional power outages mean bringing a headlamp or flashlight and a power bank is recommended. Accommodations are in relatively rural communities, and interns are expected to remain open-minded, curious, and respectful of local culture and traditions.

Make sure to visit your doctor and dentist for a check-up before your internship and to get all the recommended vaccines and/or medications necessary to stay healthy. A Yellow Fever vaccination is required for all travelers seeking to enter the country.
Buikwe District is considered relatively safe for visitors, though petty crimes such as pickpocketing or bag snatching can occur, particularly in busy areas. Road conditions and traffic safety may vary, especially in rural areas, and some communities have limited sanitation infrastructure, so it’s important to follow local health and hygiene guidance. As in any new location, interns should remain aware of their surroundings, keep belongings secure, avoid walking alone after dark, avoid carrying large amounts of cash, and follow the advice provided by our local partners and host families.

All interns are provided with a basic mobile phone, local SIM card, and portable internet modem, including monthly airtime and data for work-related communications. For personal Internet access and staying connected with friends & family, you’ll be able to top up your local mobile data plan. Consider purchasing an e-SIM to ensure connection upon arrival. Make sure your personal mobile phone is unlocked for international carriers. Based on the nature of where you’ll be staying, you should expect occasional network fluctuations and power outages.

Your host family will provide three meals each day. Ugandan meals are simple and fresh. On a typical plate, you might find matooke (green banana), rice, beans, groundnut (peanut) sauce, vegetables, sweet potatoes, cassava, Irish potatoes, or occasionally chicken, fish, and beef.

- An academic internship eligible for university credit. Check with your university to confirm if this internship qualifies for credit or alternatively we can assist you with purchasing transfer credits.
- Accommodation in a private room in a homestay

- Guidance with your visa arrangement and other preparations
- Development of an Internship Work Plan to help you reach your learning goals

- Training in community assessment, project design, and monitoring & evaluation
- Regular check-ins during the internship
- Support from the Roots team remotely
- Mid-program retreat for reflection, skill-building, and peer connection (min. 6 week internship)
- Final presentation event with community stakeholders to review achievements, reflect on learning, and ensure project continuity
- USD 450 contribution to community projects via a shared seed fund (NOTE: it is strongly encouraged to fundraise for your experience!)
- Certificate of completion at the end of the internship
- Reference letter upon request

- Visa and medical/travel insurance costs for the duration of your placement – must include cover for repatriation
- Additional data bundle for streaming and personal use
