On this Sustainable Tourism Internship, you’ll immerse yourself in one of Cambodia’s fastest-growing tourism destinations, where ancient heritage meets modern development. You’ll explore key themes such as eco-tourism, community-based tourism, and voluntourism, while researching the environmental, cultural, and economic impacts of tourism and supporting local stakeholders in developing more responsible, sustainable practices. Outside of your tourism internship, you’ll enjoy life in a vibrant cultural hub known for its welcoming community and proximity to world-famous temples.

Through research, field visits, and collaboration with NGOs and community organizations, you’ll gain practical experience in sustainable tourism development in a real-world setting. This Tourism Internship will strengthen your skills in research, communication, and critical thinking, while giving you valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities of building a more ethical and sustainable global tourism industry.

ORGANIZATION

Based just outside Siem Reap in Cambodia, this nonprofit supports community‑led development by connecting volunteers and interns with meaningful programs that strengthen local capacity and well‑being. They partner with community initiatives that provide educational activities, youth engagement, language support, and life‑skills opportunities, and they help run a community centre that serves as a hub for learning and connection. With a focus on ethical engagement and sustainable impact, their work aims to empower residents, support children and families, and promote responsible tourism and volunteer practices that benefit both the community and those looking to make a positive contribution.

TASKS & REQUIreMENTS

Your tasks as a sustainable tourism intern will vary depending on your interest & background and be tailored to the current needs of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Research the impacts of rapid tourism growth in Siem Reap focusing on social cultural environmental and economic effects
  • Explore and compare different tourism models including eco tourism community based tourism voluntourism and mass tourism
  • Investigate challenges and opportunities in developing and implementing responsible and sustainable tourism practices
  • Engage with local NGOs community organisations and tourism stakeholders to understand real world tourism development
  • Conduct field visits and observations to better understand tourism operations and community impact in practice
  • Contribute to written reports presentations or recommendations based on research findings

Requirements

  • Academic studies or background in tourism, hospitality, sustainable development, or a related field
  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal English communication skills
  • Proficiency in basic computer and research tools
  • Work independently while contributing effectively within a team
  • Exhibit cultural awareness adaptability and open-mindedness
  • Provide two professional or academic references

WHERE YOU’LL STAY

Your home for the duration of your internship is a charming, family-run guesthouse in the heart of Siem Reap. You’ll have your own comfortable room with a private bathroom and fan; get in touch to upgrade to an A/C room if you’d prefer. On-site you’ll find a restaurant, laundry facilities, and Wifi, so everything you need is right on your doorstep. Close enough to enjoy the buzz of Siem Reap’s restaurants, bars, and night markets, yet tucked away from the noise, it’s the perfect place to unwind after a rewarding day’s work.

Make sure to visit your doctor and dentist for a check-up before your internship and to get all the recommended vaccines and/or medications necessary to stay healthy.

The guesthouse where interns stay has its own 24/7 security, as well as a doctor and nurse on call.

Siem Reap is considered one of the safest and most accessible cities in Cambodia, making it a great base for your internship. That said, as with any destination, it’s important to exercise common-sense precautions: avoid walking alone at night, keep your valuables secure, and stay aware of your surroundings. As a foreigner, it’s important to be aware of and respect the culture & customs of the location you are in.

Interns have access to the guesthouse’s Wifi. You can also find many local cafes and restaurants with Wifi around town. For an affordable way to ensure constant connection, purchase a local SIM card to stay connected with family and friends – as long as your phone is unlocked for international carriers. Consider a global e-SIM plan for the first few days of your arrival until you get set up with a local SIM.

A simple breakfast is provided daily by the guesthouse. For lunch and dinner, Siem Reap offers a wide variety of affordable local restaurants nearby.
