Support vulnerable children and communities in Cambodia while gaining hands-on international experience
On this Social Work Internship, you’ll work alongside a local community center in Siem Reap, where social services are limited and many families rely on informal support systems. As a social work intern, you’ll observe and support children with emotional, behavioral, and learning challenges, assist with activities that promote wellbeing and development, and provide insights to teachers on how to better respond to students’ needs. You may also help run group sessions, contribute to community engagement initiatives, and research topics related to child development and social support.
Beyond your placement, you’ll experience daily life in Cambodia through cultural exchange, community visits, and meaningful interactions with local staff and families. TASKS & REQUIreMENTS
As a social work intern, your daily tasks will vary depending on the current needs of the organization and community, along with your background and interests. You can expect a varied role with opportunities to take on responsibilities and apply your skills in a structured and respectful environment.
Responsibilities
- Observe and identify children’s emotional behavioral and learning challenges in the classroom
- Support teachers in managing behavioral issues and promoting positive learning environments
- Assist with activities that encourage emotional wellbeing confidence and social development
- Help facilitate group sessions discussions and play based learning activities
- Provide input and ideas to support children experiencing trauma or learning difficulties
- Engage with students to build trust communication skills and confidence
- Contribute to community initiatives that involve parents and local families
- Conduct research on topics such as child development education and social support systems
Requirements
- Academic studies or background in social work, psychology, education, or a related field
- Demonstrate strong English communication skills – both written & verbal
- Ability to work effectively with children in a supportive and patient manner
- Work independently while contributing positively within a team environment
- Exhibit cultural awareness, empathy, and open-mindedness
- Be comfortable working in a community-based setting with limited resources
- Provide two professional or academic references
WHERE YOU’LL STAY
Your home for the duration of your internship is a charming, family-run guesthouse in the heart of Siem Reap. You’ll have your own comfortable room with a private bathroom and fan; get in touch to upgrade to an A/C room if you’d prefer. On-site you’ll find a restaurant, laundry facilities, and Wifi, so everything you need is right on your doorstep. Close enough to enjoy the buzz of Siem Reap’s restaurants, bars, and night markets, yet tucked away from the noise, it’s the perfect place to unwind after a rewarding day’s work.

Make sure to visit your doctor and dentist for a check-up before your internship and to get all the recommended vaccines and/or medications necessary to stay healthy.
The guesthouse where interns stay has its own 24/7 security, as well as a doctor and nurse on call.
Siem Reap is considered one of the safest and most accessible cities in Cambodia, making it a great base for your internship. That said, as with any destination, it’s important to exercise common-sense precautions: avoid walking alone at night, keep your valuables secure, and stay aware of your surroundings. As a foreigner, it’s important to be aware of and respect the culture & customs of the location you are in.

Interns have access to the guesthouse’s Wifi. You can also find many local cafes and restaurants with Wifi around town. For an affordable way to ensure constant connection, purchase a local SIM card to stay connected with family and friends – as long as your phone is unlocked for international carriers. Consider a global e-SIM plan for the first few days of your arrival until you get set up with a local SIM.
