PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Gain practical work experience and assist important mental health programs

Join a dynamic Psychology Program in Cape Town and gain hands-on experience in the field of mental health while working with a dedicated local NGO. This program is ideal for bachelor’s students or recent graduates looking to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world setting. You’ll support a range of psychosocial services and initiatives, working directly with community members from under-resourced areas.

You will assist with workshops, facilitate psychoeducation sessions, observe counseling sessions, and support awareness campaigns that promote emotional well-being and trauma recovery. Your specific placement will be at the facility that is best suited to help you reach your learning goals. Under the guidance of experienced professionals, you’ll contribute to impactful mental health projects while expanding your skills and cultural understanding in a meaningful way.

ORGANIZATION

During this Psychology Program in Cape Town, you’ll be placed at mental health facilities that best match your skill set, passion, and academic focus area. These could include safe houses, female empowerment programs, children’s centers, family counseling services, trauma counseling services, or rehab centers. You’ll be mentored by an experienced Registered Counsellor, who will guide you through your work and offer regular one on one supervisions that will allow for reflection and assessment.

TASKS & REQUIreMENTS

During this Psychology Program, your tasks will vary, depending on your qualifications, experience and the situation. Either way, you can expect to gain practical work experience and valuable insights into the day to day running of these facilities. You’ll be exposed to clients with different levels of trauma diagnoses and mental health conditions, and you’ll gain a good understanding of how group sessions are run, how assessments are done, and how progress is made. Throughout your Volunteer Psychology Program, you will be supervised and managed, and you will never be asked to take on tasks that are beyond your comfort or skill level.

This opportunity serves as a great tool to help you decide which path of specialization to follow, whilst giving back to vulnerable communities and assisting nonprofit organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Shadowing mental health professionals in different settings that focus on addictions, safe houses and counselling centers
  • Assisting registered staff such as social workers and counsellors in preparing and running group sessions
  • Observing individual or group counseling sessions

Throughout your placement, you’ll be guided by a registered and experienced local counsellor, who will do an initial training session with you, followed by a session every two weeks and one at the end of your program. These sessions will allow you to learn about the local mental health field, prepare for the different elements of your work, and reflect on your experiences, such as boundaries and countertransference. They will also help you place this experience in the context of your degree and future career.

Requirements

  • If you want to get involved you need to have a minimum BA undergraduate degree in Psychology (NQF7). If you have done a 4th year “Honours degree” in Psychology (NQF8) or a Masters degree (NQF9), this may improve your chances of being accepted on the Psychology program.
  • Strong social skills
  • Efficient level of English (written & spoken)
  • A flexible attitude
  • Interest in assisting social development projects

WHERE YOU’LL STAY

You’ll stay at a comfortable and welcoming volunteer house in a picturesque suburb of Cape Town, on the Southern Peninsula. It’s a great setting; you’ll be surrounded by beaches and mountains, and the penguin colony at Boulder’s Beach is only a 5-minute drive away. The house hosts people from around the world that are volunteering in the surrounding communities, which creates a wonderfully international vibe. The nearest shops and restaurants are a 5-minute drive away, and Cape Town’s city center is a 40-minute drive away. It’s easy to take Ubers and make your way around, or we can assist you with renting a car for more flexibility.

Safety & Support

Safety & Support

South Africa does have high crime rates, so it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and the people around you. While being based at Yoga Shala it’s recommended to rent a car for the duration of your stay to comfortably get around or be prepared to book Ubers as the accommodation is not within walking distances to any public commodities. When visiting the city center, do not walk anywhere alone and do not walk anywhere at night – it’s better to Uber, no matter the distance, even if you are in a group. Keep your belongings close to you (avoid using handbags), always keep an eye on your drinks when out socializing, don’t walk around with large sums of cash (you can pay for everything with a card), minimize wearing flashy accessories, and be cautious of overly friendly strangers.

Make sure to visit your doctor and dentist for a check-up before your internship and to get all the recommended vaccines and/or medications necessary to stay healthy. During your placement, you’ll have access to the Roots team remotely, along with your internship supervisor on the ground.

Communication

Communication

The accommodation offers free Wi-Fi to keep family and friends up to date via WhatsApp, Zoom, etc. Cafes/restaurants also offer free Wi-Fi. You can also consider getting a local SIM card if your phone is unlocked, or setting your phone’s status to roaming, depending on your provider’s rates.

Meals

Meals

A simple breakfast and a delicious cooked dinner (vegetarian & vegan options available) from Monday to Friday are included in your fee. Indulge in local dishes, like bobotie and South African Braai! For desserts, don’t miss out on milk tarts and malva pudding. There is a diverse food scene in Cape Town, so no matter your cuisine preference or dietary restrictions you’ll have plenty of options. Let us know in advance if you have any allergies/dietary needs.

Psychology Internship, South Africa

My two months in Cape Town have been nothing short of transformative. As an aspiring child and adolescent psychologist, this internship offered me an invaluable opportunity to delve into the realities of working with survivors of abuse, particularly women and children, and to make a meaningful impact. Throughout my time, I contributed to various aspects of the center’s operations. I assisted with case management, facilitated therapeutic activities, and supported children in recreational sessions. Each interaction reaffirmed my passion for this field and deepened my understanding of the complexities of trauma and recovery. On a personal level, this experience was both challenging and enriching. I learned to navigate emotionally charged situations with empathy and professionalism. It enhanced my communication skills, adaptability, and ability to maintain boundaries—essential skills for a future psychologist. As I reflect on this journey, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such a vital cause. The lessons I’ve learned, the people I’ve met, and the stories I’ve heard will stay with me as I continue my path in psychology. This experience has further solidified my commitment to making a difference in the lives of vulnerable individuals and advocating for their mental health and well-being. To anyone considering an internship with Roots, I wholeheartedly recommend it. It is a challenging yet deeply rewarding experience that will not only enhance your professional skills but also leave an indelible mark on your personal growth.

Zarah, British – University of Wolverhampton

Psychology Internship, South Africa

I am so grateful that Roots introduced me to my host organization and supervisors. With their help, I was able to secure an internship that perfectly fit my learning desires. I engaged in a variety of tasks; working in a women's safe house twice a week and once a week at a recovery center, with the other days being spent at a youth center in a township working with around 80 kids daily. I’m proud of the work I did which required focus, commitment, self-reflection, and handling challenging environments. The diverse program had me doing tasks that helped me gain more experience in the field of psychology that I plan to have a career in and gave me a true insight into what I want to do in the future.
