During this Advocacy Internship, you will have the opportunity to gain tangible skills in policy summarization, reporting, and promoting clean cooking, carbon credits, and WASH. As the work directly supports the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, it gives you the chance to be a part of global change. TASKS & REQUIreMENTS
As this Advocacy Internship involves community-based projects, your tasks as a policy intern will shift depending on the organization’s priorities and will be tailor made according to your skills and goals. This flexible approach will provide a meaningful learning experience for those who are passionate about clean cooking, carbon, and WASH.
What You’ll Do
- Review national framework and sector policies in energy/WASH
- Draft concise briefs that align with Uganda’s development
- Attend district and national level stakeholder meetings
- Prepare accurate notes of events, workshops, and events to synthesize outcomes
- Promote campaigns on clean cooking, carbon credits, and WASH
- Collaborate with community leaders to make a meaningful impact

WHERE YOU’LL STAY
Interns will live with a welcoming Ugandan host family as part of their placement, with their own lockable room furnished with basic essentials. Living with the family provides a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in daily Ugandan life, from shared meals to local routines and traditions. Most families will hand-wash your laundry, though interns are responsible for washing undergarments and delicate items. Bucket baths are common, with hot or cold water depending on the household, and occasional power outages mean bringing a headlamp or flashlight and a power bank is recommended. Accommodations are in relatively rural communities, and interns are expected to remain open-minded, curious, and respectful of local culture and traditions.

Make sure to visit your doctor and dentist for a check-up before your internship and to get all the recommended vaccines and/or medications necessary to stay healthy. A Yellow Fever vaccination is required for all travelers seeking to enter the country.
Buikwe District is considered relatively safe for visitors, though petty crimes such as pickpocketing or bag snatching can occur, particularly in busy areas. Road conditions and traffic safety may vary, especially in rural areas, and some communities have limited sanitation infrastructure, so it’s important to follow local health and hygiene guidance. As in any new location, interns should remain aware of their surroundings, keep belongings secure, avoid walking alone after dark, avoid carrying large amounts of cash, and follow the advice provided by our local partners and host families.

All interns are provided with a basic mobile phone, local SIM card, and portable internet modem, including monthly airtime and data for work-related communications. For personal Internet access and staying connected with friends & family, you’ll be able to top up your local mobile data plan. Consider purchasing an e-SIM to ensure connection upon arrival. Make sure your personal mobile phone is unlocked for international carriers. Based on the nature of where you’ll be staying, you should expect occasional network fluctuations and power outages.

Your host family will provide three meals each day. Ugandan meals are simple and fresh. On a typical plate, you might find matooke (green banana), rice, beans, groundnut (peanut) sauce, vegetables, sweet potatoes, cassava, Irish potatoes, or occasionally chicken, fish, and beef.

- Careful matchmaking. It takes time to find the right internship for each person, and we take this process very seriously.
- Initial interview with one of our team to gauge your skills, interests, and desired learning outcomes.
- An academic internship eligible for university credit. Check with your university to confirm if this internship qualifies for credit or alternatively we can assist you with purchasing transfer credits.
- Accommodation in a private room in a homestay
- Airport transfers upon arrival and departure
- Three meals a day
- Local mobile phone, SIM card, and portable internet modem, including monthly airtime and data for work-related communication and emergencies
- Guidance with your visa arrangement and other preparations
- Development of an Internship Work Plan to help you reach your learning goals
- On-site mentoring to support community engagement and responsible behavior
- Orientation program covering local culture, community engagement, and sustainable development skills
- Training in community assessment, project design, and monitoring & evaluation
- Regular check-ins during the internship
- Support from the Roots team remotely
- Mid-program retreat for reflection, skill-building, and peer connection (min. 6 week internship)
- Final presentation event with community stakeholders to review achievements, reflect on learning, and ensure project continuity
- USD 450 contribution to community projects via a shared seed fund (NOTE: it is strongly encouraged to fundraise for your experience!)
- Certificate of completion at the end of the internship
- Reference letter upon request

- Flights to Entebbe International Airport
- Visa and medical/travel insurance costs for the duration of your placement – must include cover for repatriation
- Additional data bundle for streaming and personal use
- Drinks, snacks, and items of personal nature (f.e. curios, gifts, clothing)
