Safety & Support

Zanzibar is one of the safer destinations in East Africa and Chukwani is a quiet, predominantly residential area. As with any destination, common-sense precautions apply – stay aware of your surroundings, particularly in busier tourist areas, and follow the guidance of your local team. Violent crime is rare, and engaging with local communities goes a long way. All medical internship activities are conducted under professional supervision, with clear limitations on responsibilities based on experience.

Before travelling, ensure your vaccinations are up to date and consult your doctor regarding any recommended medications for the region.

Communication

Communication

There is no Wifii at the guesthouse, so we recommend purchasing a local prepaid SIM card on arrival for data and calls. Ensure your phone is unlocked for international carriers before you depart, and consider arranging an international e-SIM for the first few days to get settled.

Meals

All meals are prepared fresh at the guesthouse with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included on weekdays and brunch & dinner on the weekends. You’ll enjoy traditional Zanzibari home cooking, a flavourful blend of African, Arab, and Indian culinary influences. Typical dishes include wali (rice), ugali (maize porridge), nyama choma (grilled meat), mshikaki (marinated beef), samaki (fish), pilau (rice mixed with a variety of spices), biriyani, and ndizi-nyama (plantains with meat). Once a week, all participants come together to plan the upcoming weekly menu. Tap water is not safe to drink; clean drinking water is provided and bottled water is widely available for purchase.
