Support human rights advocacy and strengthen gender justice through research, advocacy material development, and community engagement initiatives
Be directly involved in the human rights movement in South Africa by strengthening protection systems as a researcher and communicator. As an intern, you will provide support for Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) programming through engagement with affected communities, as well as perform policy and human rights research. This on-the-ground, high exposure internship will receive guidance and training from a GBVF program lead as you will drive awareness on one of the most pressing issues in South Africa today.
Between community involvement, mentorship, and gaining practical experience in program implementation, this grassroots project will enable interns to transition into impactful roles. While this internship would be the most effective in-person, there is an option to complete it fully remote from anywhere in the world. Given the sensitive nature of this topic, this option allows interns to contribute primarily through research and program support. However, in-country exposure would help strengthen professional relationships while being immersed in South African culture.
Learning Objectives
This South African registered nonprofit operates at the intersection of youth empowerment, gender equality, climate resilience, and access to justice, delivering community-driven and evidence-based programs that address the root causes of social inequality. Working alongside communities, corporate social investors, and fellow nonprofit organizations, the organization implements interventions across areas including gender-based violence prevention, skills development, support for persons with disabilities, and care for orphans and vulnerable children.
Guided by a multidisciplinary team of senior mentors and technical advisors, its programs equip young people, particularly women and other vulnerable groups, with practical experience, workplace readiness, and leadership skills. Through this work, the organization has produced a growing pipeline of emerging leaders who are now driving grassroots initiatives and contributing to sustainable development in their communities.
Interns will be exposed to high volumes of sensitive, affected individuals within local communities, therefore, potential challenges or delays could arise. While project assignments are heavily influenced by interests, skills, background, and period of involvement, interns should still come mentally prepared for the unexpected.
Depending on your chosen internship format, responsibilities may vary. Remote interns should expect to contribute primarily through research, resource development, and virtual collaboration.
