Engage with a community project to experience the influence of culture, social values, and the roles of politics, religion, gender, and ethnicity

If you’re passionate about driving positive change in human rights by connecting with communities and engaging in social work focused on development, equality, and justice, this Human Rights Internship is for you. You will collaborate with a dedicated team in the country of your choice in Latin America to address the impact of poverty and discrimination on access to vital resources. Through hands-on work, you’ll contribute to research, community outreach, and advocacy efforts that aim to create more equitable opportunities for marginalized groups.

This Human Rights Internship will not only provide you with invaluable insight into the challenges faced by communities, but also allow you to make a tangible impact through your daily work. You’ll gain practical skills in human rights, social welfare, and research while working alongside professionals committed to advancing social justice. The bonus is, you’ll get to explore a Latin American city and immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and stunning nature of this region of the world.

ORGANIZATION

Founded in 2003, this organization is a leader in educational travel. With locally based institutes in Costa Rica, Peru, and Guatemala, they provide immersive cultural exchange and unique, resume-building experiences. Their mission is to improve impact in every community that they work and live in, and inspire people to be open-minded, to travel, and to learn.
Through collaborations with nonprofits, NGOs, and socially responsible initiatives, this organization offers interns the chance to apply their knowledge and skills to real-world challenges. These internships empower local projects to expand their reach while giving interns valuable global experience in their area of interest.

TASKS & REQUIreMENTS

As a Human Rights intern, you will be matched with the organization that is best suited to help you reach your learning goals. Your exact role will be tailored to fit your strengths whether it be outreach, research, education, or even fundraising.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with community outreach initiatives
  • Collaborate with team members on various social work and development projects
  • Interview potential beneficiaries
  • Conduct research on key human rights issues
  • Attend organizational meetings
  • Edit & translate documents
  • Participate in the facilitation of fundraising campaigns
  • Support digital marketing activities
  • Create educational materials
  • Present a final project:  Practicums (< 8 weeks) require either a 10-20 page written paper or a 1-hour PowerPoint presentation. Internships (8 weeks +) require both a 10-20 page written paper and a 1-hour PowerPoint presentation

Requirements

  • Academic background in international studies, human rights, gender equality, social equity, or a related field
  • Hardworking, eager to learn, and ready to contribute
  • Positive attitude with a proactive mindset
  • Creative problem-solver, able to work with limited resources
  • Intermediate proficiency in Spanish is REQUIRED
  • Minimum age of 19
  • All interns are required to submit weekly journals and a final deliverable

CUSCO – WHERE YOU’LL STAY

You’ll have the opportunity to stay with a welcoming host family which offers a unique chance to immerse yourself in Peruvian culture and build meaningful connections. You’ll enjoy the privacy of your room or share with up to 3 people while benefiting from shared amenities like Wifi, washing machines, and a kitchen for preparing lunch. This option offers a warm and welcoming home experience, making your living experience in Peru as authentic as possible. If you’d prefer to stay in a hostel, please reach out for prices and availability. If you’d like to upgrade to a student residence, apartment, hostel or hotel room, get in touch for prices and availability. Spending a few weeks as an intern in Cusco allows you to fully immerse yourself in the city’s everyday life, from learning local customs and enjoying home-cooked meals to navigating its charming streets and discovering hidden gems beyond the tourist paths.

Safety & Support

Make sure to visit your doctor and dentist for a check-up before your internship and obtain any recommended vaccines and/or medications necessary to stay healthy. During your placement, you’ll have access to the Roots team remotely, support staff on the ground, along with an internship supervisor and program coordinator.

Being a capital city, tourists can be easy targets for pickpockets in Cusco, so it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and the people around you. Stick to populated areas and always know how to safely return to your accommodation. Use recommended taxi drivers/official apps (Uber or Cabify), keep your belongings close to you (avoid using handbags), and keep an eye on your drinks when out socializing. Take extra precautions at night by staying in a group and never walking down dark streets.

Communication

Wifi is available at all accommodation types, however, it’s important to note that the strength and speed can be unpredictable, so it is recommended to arrange a data plan to ensure connectivity. Using roaming on your current plan can be expensive, so be sure to unlock your phone for international carriers prior to travel and purchase a local SIM or global e-SIM for a more affordable connection. The organization’s main office in Cusco also has a computer lounge available for internet access.

Meals

Breakfast and dinner are provided seven days/week. Signature Peruvian meals will likely include ceviche and casado. Other popular traditional dishes are Lomo Saltado, Pollo a la Brasa, Chicharon, Adobo, and Mazamora (purple corn pudding).  Please inform us of any dietary restrictions or allergies in advance so we can be sure to accommodate your needs.

MANUEL ANTONIO – WHERE YOU’LL STAY

Stay with a welcoming host family and fully immerse yourself in Costa Rican culture while building meaningful connections. Enjoy the privacy of your own room or share with up to three others, with access to shared amenities like WiFi, washing machines, and a kitchen for preparing meals. This homestay experience provides a warm and authentic way to live in Costa Rica. If you prefer alternative accommodations, upgrades to student residences, apartments, hostels, or hotel rooms are available—just reach out for details. Internship start dates are every Monday, arrival on Sunday, departure on Saturday.

  • Initial interview with one of our team to gauge your skills, interests, and desired learning outcomes.
  • An academic internship eligible for university credit. Check with your university to confirm if this internship qualifies for credit or alternatively we can assist you with purchasing transfer credits.
