If you’re passionate about teaching and ready to share that enthusiasm with students in the classroom, this Education Internship is your gateway to kickstarting your teaching career. Dive into an immersive learning environment where students are excited to engage with dynamic, interactive lessons. As a teaching intern, you’ll have the chance to shape innovative educational materials and create immersive activities that spark curiosity in learners. Placements are offered in private or International Baccalaureate (IB) schools, where English is the primary language of instruction, and the schools are often bilingual. 

You will be paired with a dedicated faculty member, who will guide you throughout your journey, ensuring you gain hands-on experience while supporting your professional development. This is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of pedagogy, collaborate with passionate educators, and develop the skills needed to turn your teaching aspirations into a rewarding reality. In your down time, you’ll get to explore a vibrant Latin American destination and immerse yourself in the food, nature, culture, and community.

With locally based institutes in Costa Rica, Peru, and Guatemala, they provide immersive cultural exchange and unique, resume-building experiences. Through collaborations with nonprofits, NGOs, and socially responsible initiatives, this organization offers interns the chance to apply their knowledge and skills to real-world challenges. These internships empower local projects to expand their reach while giving interns valuable global experience in their area of interest.

TASKS & REQUIreMENTS

As an Education intern, you will be matched with the organization that is best suited to help you reach your learning goals. Your exact role will be tailored to where you are at in your teaching journey.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in classroom instruction and support classroom management
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver lessons for assigned subjects 
  • Provide individualized support to students in small groups and one-on-one settings  
  • Participate in weekly meetings with the school director
  • Monitor student progress and provide feedback to support learning
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff to enhance the educational experience
  • Present a final project:  Practicums (< 8 weeks) require either a 10-20 page written paper or a 1-hour PowerPoint presentation. Internships (8 weeks +) require both a 10-20 page written paper and a 1-hour PowerPoint presentation

Requirements

  • Academic background or experience in education, TEFL, program facilitation, workshop leading, or a related field
  • Passionate about youth development and eager to learn
  • Strong public speaking skills and able to effectively communicate
  • Can-do attitude
  • Spanish language proficiency is not mandatory
  • Minimum age of 19
  • All interns are required to submit weekly journals and a final deliverable

CUSCO – WHERE YOU’LL STAY

You’ll have the opportunity to stay with a welcoming host family which offers a unique chance to immerse yourself in Peruvian culture and build meaningful connections. This option offers a warm and welcoming home experience, making your living experience in Peru as authentic as possible. Spending time as an intern in Cusco allows you to fully immerse yourself in the city’s everyday life, from learning local customs and enjoying home-cooked meals to navigating its charming streets and discovering hidden gems beyond the tourist paths. During your placement, you’ll have access to the Roots team remotely, support staff on the ground, along with an internship supervisor and program coordinator.

Being a major city, tourists can be easy targets for pickpockets in Cusco, so it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and the people around you. Stick to populated areas and always know how to safely return to your accommodation. Use recommended taxi drivers/official apps, keep your belongings close to you (avoid using handbags), and keep an eye on your drinks when out socializing. Take extra precautions at night by staying in a group and never walking down dark streets.

Communication

Wifi is available at all accommodation types, however, it’s important to note that the strength and speed can be unpredictable, so it is recommended to arrange a data plan to ensure connectivity. Using roaming on your current plan can be expensive, so be sure to unlock your phone for international carriers prior to travel and purchase a local SIM or global e-SIM for a more affordable connection. The organization’s main office in Cusco also has a computer lounge available for internet access.

Meals

Breakfast and dinner are provided seven days/week at your homestay. You can prepare your lunch in the kitchen or try out eateries near your internship site. Signature Peruvian traditional dishes include ceviche, lomo saltado, pollo a la brasa, picarones, adobo, and mazamora.

MANUEL ANTONIO – WHERE YOU’LL STAY

Stay with a welcoming host family and fully immerse yourself in Costa Rican culture while building meaningful connections. ANTIGUA – WHERE YOU’LL STAY

Your accommodation will be arranged from the Sunday before your program begins until the Saturday after it ends. You’ll stay with a welcoming host family, giving you the chance to immerse yourself in local culture and daily life, while having the privacy of your own room along with access to amenities like Wifi and laundry facilities. Internship start dates are every Monday, arrival on Sunday, departure on Saturday.

As part of this internship, you will have access to the organization’s in-country institute which offers a variety of support. Beyond orientation and general country guidance, you’ll attend 1 hour daily of Spanish classes at the institute and be able to join their social activities (cultural events, salsa & cooking classes, meeting spaces). This is an ideal placement for Spanish language immersion and social networking.

Do I need to have Spanish language skills for this internship?

Some placements require intermediate Spanish speaking skills, especially those involving regular interaction with local partners or community members. As part of the application process, you’ll complete a short language assessment to help determine your placement. Daily Spanish classes are included throughout your internship to help you improve your communication skills and deepen your cultural understanding.

What support will I receive as an intern in Latin America?

You’ll receive support throughout your internship, both in-country and remotely. On the ground, you’ll have access to staff who can assist with logistics, cultural orientation, and general wellbeing. The host organization’s in-country institute provides a space to collaborate and connect with other volunteers, interns, and language immersion students. Remote support is also available throughout your experience to help with preparation, ongoing guidance, and any questions that arise during your placement.

Can I travel around Latin America during my internship?

You’ll have weekends and evening free time to explore nearby areas around your internship location. For extended travel, it’s best to plan your adventures for before or after your placement. If you’d like to take time off during your internship for a long-weekend trip, you’ll need to coordinate with your supervisor at least 2 weeks prior to request leave.

Will I receive any stipend during this internship abroad?

All internships through Roots are unpaid opportunities. These internships in Latin America are designed to offer practical experience, cultural immersion, and skills development in a professional context, which can add long-term value to your academic and career goals. You’ll also have plenty of personal growth opportunities to push yourself out of your comfort zone and apply transferable skills in practical settings.
