Perform research, data analysis, and reporting towards climate resilience programing while also improving awareness initiatives in areas such as poverty and inequality
This internship offers the option to perform research within the areas of climate change, poverty, and inequality in a community based in South Africa directly affected by these intersecting challenges. Exposed to every step of the research process, interns can be involved with program support, data analysis, reporting, and environment awareness initiatives. Participation in this role offers the unique ability to examine cause-and-effect relationships between these factors and gain a deeper understanding of social and environmental conflict.
Under the mentorship of a Climate & SDG Program Lead, interns will complete a structured training program and receive regular guidance and feedback throughout the internship. This SDG internship stream provides exposure to several social conflicts while developing practical research and analytical skills. Interns may choose to participate either in-country or remotely, with both offering meaningful contributions. Those who choose the in-country experience also have the opportunity to engage directly with local communities and observe these challenges firsthand, providing valuable context for their research.
Learning Objectives
This South African registered nonprofit operates at the intersection of youth empowerment, gender equality, climate resilience, and access to justice, delivering community-driven and evidence-based programs that address the root causes of social inequality. Working alongside communities, corporate social investors, and fellow nonprofit organizations, the organization implements interventions across areas including gender-based violence prevention, skills development, support for persons with disabilities, and care for orphans and vulnerable children.
Guided by a multidisciplinary team of senior mentors and technical advisors, its programs equip young people, particularly women and other vulnerable groups, with practical experience, workplace readiness, and leadership skills. Through this work, the organization has produced a growing pipeline of emerging leaders who are now driving grassroots initiatives and contributing to sustainable development in their communities.
Due to the overlap of several issues that this internship addresses, interns should come with an idea of where they would like to contribute the most. Project assignments are otherwise influenced by skills, background, and period of involvement.
Interns should also be prepared for exposure of poverty and inequality in local communities if the in-country option is chosen. However, because this internship is primarily research-based, remote interns still complete the same core work.
