Urban Harvest

Urban Harvest is South Africa’s oldest edible garden service. They install, maintain and support organic food gardens. And in this way, they make it easy for South Africans to grow their own fresh, nutrient-rich and chemical free food. They also want to make the food gardening experience fun, easy and hugely rewarding by providing professional support to make the gardens a success. So besides installing and maintaining the garden, they will also train you (and give you tips and tricks) to do the maintenance yourself to ensure long-term sustainability and value. Besides installing gardens at (private) homes and businesses Urban Harvest works together with sponsors through valuable corporate social investments (CSI) on the school community food-garden model to ensure highly productive gardens & inspiring ‘garden champions’ that generate food, incomes, and skills for the beneficiaries and their surrounding communities.

Urban Harvest believes that by helping South Africans to grow their own food, they are supporting a healthier, happier and more sustainable way of life for everyone. Their ecological approach to food gardens supports natural systems and helps to cut down on the harmful effects of the packaging, travel miles and chemical pollution created by the mainstream, store-bought foods.

Urban Harvest interns

What to expect as an intern?

Their Urban Harvest’s office culture is very casual and relaxed. The team is small and very warm – always willing to help with anything, and makes an effort to get to know you. Their office and small nursery are located on the premises of the Mary Kihn Primary School where they have a big vegetable garden and amazing views on Devil’s Peak. And as an intern, you’ll be sure to get your hands dirty as the team goes out every day for maintenance of the gardens.

What other interns say about their internship with Urban Harvest

“Being a Food Security and Urban Farming Intern with Urban Harvest is genuinely so much fun. The gardens are amazing, the kids are curious to learn, and I gain more knowledge about produce and organic farming everyday. On a personal note, I love seeing the direct impact that I have in my role because the company is small. They say it only takes one seed to make a difference, and it brings me so much joy to feel like I get to be a seed here!”
