Internships with the The Living Ocean

The Living Ocean is a nonprofit organization that aims to create long-lasting change around marine conservation in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Based in the Netherlands they operate by partnering with and supporting local, community-focused initiatives. Their goal is to create long-lasting change in attitudes around marine conservation to help protect our oceans and ecosystems for future generations.

They believe the best way to instigate sustainable development in marine conservation is through community engagement and involvement. As such, their main focus is to educate locals on the importance of protecting our oceans, train them in sustainable practices, and create means of employment in the field of marine conservation. In this way, they support a range of sustainable solutions from beach clean-ups to turtle hatcheries to coral reef restoration.

Why Intern with The Living Ocean

Find out from our previous interns how internships with The Living Ocean can jumpstart your professional career and expand your soft skills.

I had a wonderful time in Zanzibar where I was actively involved in coordinating six different projects, developing initiatives, collecting and analyzing data, and contributing to outputs shared with the government. This hands-on experience not only strengthened my communication and public speaking skills but also provided practical, transferable skills that will support my studies and future career in marine conservation. I would highly recommend this internship to any student looking for a meaningful and impactful experience—just get stuck in and go for it!
