Gain practical teaching experience working with young girls from disadvantaged families in Cusco
This organization works to support young girls to overcome socio-economic barriers to becoming independent, happy, and successful individuals. By providing the girls with additional classes and other support with their education, the girls are able to maximize their talents, passions and reach their full potential.
Schools in Cusco are often very poorly-funded and resourced. Because of this, teaching is generally focused on rote-style learning from memory, rather than through critical thinking or problem-solving. There are no resources or extra support when the students fall behind, and they will often fall so far behind that gaining a higher education becomes near impossible. Many of the children from extremely poor families are permanently pulled out of school by their parents so that they can start to earn money for the family.
The organization provides the girls with additional classes across a range of subjects, including STEM, English, Health, and more. Through specialist teaching, the classes are designed to promote critical thinking and creativity, rather than regurgitating facts.
For this internship, you’ll plan and deliver engaging, creative classes that will help the girls think and grow as independent learners – maximizing their potential to succeed at school and beyond.
Learning objectives:
- Develop your teaching skills and expertise through hands-on classroom experience
- Equip young people with the tools to become independent, creative, and critical thinkers
- Understand teaching processes to best monitor and evaluate progress
- Gain insight into international nonprofit work and community development
- Gain international work experience for your future
ORGANIZATION
Chaska is a psychology-based program that works to break the cycle of poverty and gender inequality across Cusco, Peru. Girls from extremely poor, single-parent families who demonstrate great potential are identified through in-depth interviews and psychological testing and are selected to join the program each year. The program is built upon three pillars of support: financial, educational, and emotional; through assisting with extra classes, delivering workshops on key social issues, as well as providing healthy meals and other financial support, this nonprofit helps the girls gain the tools to thrive as healthy, independent and successful individuals.

The apartments are located in a safe area of Cusco, South America’s oldest inhabited city, steeped in culture and tradition.
The city, famed as the gateway to the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, is a wonderful melting pot of Incan majesty, Andean baroque, and a cosmopolitan shopping and eating scene.
