Support students in local schools and help young people build the skills they need to learn and grow
Schools in Likoni, Mombasa are doing important work with limited resources. This internship places you in local classrooms, working alongside teachers to support student learning across subjects including English, Math, Science, Geography, Arts, Music, Agriculture, and Computer. You’ll prepare lesson plans, deliver lessons, mark assignments, and track student progress. It’s practical teaching experience in a setting that needs it.
In April, August, and December, interns can add a Digital Skills component to their placement, supporting young people in building foundational computer skills for education and employment. Mombasa is a city with deep Swahili roots, a vibrant food scene, and some of Kenya’s most accessible beaches. Weekends here are worth looking forward to.

ORGANIZATION
This nonprofit works in ultra-poor rural villages, drylands, and urban slums across Eastern Africa. Since its founding, it has focused on communities where the absence of water, food, and opportunity has pushed young people away from home in search of work. Through community-designed, community-led, and community-owned projects, it supports critical issues such as informal enterprise growth, limited access to education, and land degradation, aiming to equip vulnerable groups with the tools to earn, learn, and farm sustainably. Every project is anchored to a UN Sustainable Development Goal and built to continue after outside support ends. The organization serves some of the most marginalized groups, including family farmers, out-of-school youth, women entrepreneurs, people living with disabilities, and refugees, working to drive long-term change at both community and systemic levels.
TASKS & REQUIreMENTS
Your placement will be tailored to your background and the school’s needs. Interns are typically assigned one subject taught across multiple classrooms.
What You’ll Do
- Teach one or more subjects in local classrooms
- Prepare lesson plans with your supervising teacher
- Develop educational materials
- Set, distribute, and mark student assignments
- Track and record student progress throughout your placement
- Support and encourage students in their learning
- Take part in school events and activities as required
- Support students with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, helping to build confidence and skills for computer use (Digital Skills months only)
Requirements
- Studying or recently graduated in Education, Arts, Sciences, or a related field (other fields considered)
- Patient, creative, and enthusiastic about working with young learners
- Strong English communication skills
- Able to adapt materials to different ability levels and classroom contexts
- Basic computer literacy for the Digital Skills component
- No prior teaching experience needed
WHERE YOU’LL STAY
During your placement you will stay in a shared bunk bed room (2 pax) in a homestay. The neighborhood is home to both Christian and Muslim families, who look out for one another. Your host family has been hosting interns and volunteers for more than 15 years and they speak Swahili and English. You’ll enjoy getting to know Kenyan culture and in your spare time can explore the beaches, wander through the historic town and enjoy local cuisine.

Make sure to visit your doctor and dentist for a check-up before your internship and to get all the recommended vaccines and/or medications necessary to stay healthy. The compound of your homestay has a wall around it, a locked main gate, lock for the main door, and a locking door for your own room. There are also two (friendly) dogs to help keep the place secure. Your host family lives on the compound and is ready to help, in person or by phone, any time. For your safety, please use the motorbikes, tuk-tuks, or taxis that your host family recommends or shows you.

You’ll be able to use your phone in Kenya with roaming data turned on, global e-sim card or a local SIM card if your phone is unlocked. Both the homestay and office have 24-hour Wi-Fi, and you can purchase bundles while out of the home and office.

At your homestay three fresh local meals are offered together with the host in the living room. In addition, the kitchen is open for you to cook your own meals at any time, at no extra cost beyond your own ingredients. Make sure to notify us in advance of any allergies/dietary needs.

Mombasa offers the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure for interns. In your free time, you can unwind on beautiful beaches, explore the historic streets of Old Town and Fort Jesus, snorkel or dive in the Indian Ocean, and enjoy vibrant local markets and coastal cuisine. Whether you’re chasing sunsets, wildlife, or weekend adventures, Mombasa has plenty to make your internship experience unforgettable.

This Teaching Internship is only available in the following months: January–March, May–July or September–October. In April, August and December the Digital Skills project is offered. Exact arrival and departure dates will be discussed with you during the application process.

- Initial interview with one of our team to gauge your skills, interests, and desired learning outcomes.
- An academic internship eligible for university credit. Check with your university to confirm if this internship qualifies for credit or alternatively we can assist you with purchasing transfer credits.

It’s essential to consult your university’s academic advisor to confirm whether your internship qualifies for university credits or meets specific academic requirements. We can also assist with purchasing transfer credits to add alongside your internship experience.
Will I receive compensation during my internship in Kenya?
Regrettably, internships with nonprofit organizations are unpaid; however, there are various avenues to secure funding for your internship. Despite the absence of monetary compensation, the wealth of knowledge and the array of opportunities for both professional and personal growth are truly invaluable.
