PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Dive into marine conservation in Kenya where you’ll contribute to community-driven projects that balance environmental protection and livelihood improvement.
As a Sustainable Fisheries Development intern, you will actively participate in ground-breaking marine conservation projects, working alongside dedicated conservationists and local communities. This internship provides hands-on experience in coral reef fisheries restoration, permaculture, resource governance, citizen science monitoring, and community-based marine and coastal resource management. You’ll engage with the daily lives of coastal fishing communities, learning how they rely on the ocean for their survival, and contribute to solution labs focused on addressing food insecurity, climate-induced coral bleaching, poverty, and marine ecosystem fragility.
Throughout the internship, you’ll witness firsthand the impacts of climate change, pollution, and overfishing on marine environments and the communities that depend on them. You’ll also gain insights into the remarkable resilience of these ecosystems and communities. This experience is designed to inspire a passion for marine conservation and community development, equipping you with the knowledge and skills to become an advocate for sustainable practices and responsible tourism.
ORGANIZATION
Established in 2019, Oceans Alive Foundation’s (OA) mission is to co-manage marine resources by supporting local fishing communities in improving livelihoods. Interns at OA gain hands-on experience in various projects, including coral reef fisheries restoration, turtle conservation, and community-led programs like permaculture gardening and beach clean-ups. With a focus on environmental stewardship and community resilience, OA offers a unique opportunity for interns to contribute to meaningful change. This includes live classroom experience while developing their skills in sustainable development and conservation.
TASKS & REQUIreMENTS
Your internship will be tailored to your skills and interests, allowing you to focus on areas that align with your career goals. You will engage in a wide variety of activities, from fieldwork to community outreach, with opportunities to contribute to multiple ongoing projects.
Responsibilities
- Marine Conservation and Coral Reef Fisheries Restoration: Dive into the heart of marine conservation by engaging in coral gardening and reef restoration projects to restore damage done by illegal and destructive fishing practices and climate-induced coral bleaching. You’ll assist with various stages of coral restoration, including seeding of coral nursery tables with coral fragments, coral nursery table maintenance, out-planting nursery-grown corals, and monitoring growth and survival of re-planted coral. Additionally, you’ll support the creation of artificial reefs, their out-planting and exposure to the effectiveness of different restoration techniques.
- Community-Based Marine Resource Management: Working closely with local fishing communities who are organized in Beach Management Units structures to support governance in sustainable fishing practices in marine resource co-management. This includes participating in community patrols and turtle watch to protect marine sanctuaries, involvement in conducting educational workshops on marine conservation, and helping with the development of educational materials for local schools. You’ll also get involved in beach clean-ups and support the community’s efforts to reduce pollution and protect marine life.
- Climate-Smart Agriculture and Permaculture: Assist in promoting backyard climate-smart permaculture to improve household nutrition in coastal fishing communities. You’ll participate in exposing local women to vertical and sack gardening, waste recycling, and composting techniques to enhance food production in poor soils and in techniques that promote resilience to climate change. This hands-on work includes garden maintenance, planting, and monitoring the success of these sustainable practices, contributing to the well-being of the community.
- Sustainable Livelihoods Development: Contribute to initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods through eco-friendly practices. This includes building energy-efficient jiko stoves for fishmongers (Mama Karangas) to reduce deforestation and smoke inhalation. This will also include supporting the Trash for Cash project, which encourages beach and backyard clean up, upcycling of plastic and generating income for local women. You’ll also have the opportunity to work side-by-side with Mama Karangas and measure the impact of these projects and propose improvements.
- Research and Impact Assessment: Participate in the collection and analysis of data to assess the impact of various fishing techniques and how conservation efforts can restore marine ecosystems and bring coastal communities benefits from ecotourism. This involves conducting site surveys, monitoring species recovery in marine protected areas, and evaluating the success of community-based conservation initiatives and of coral artificial reefs. Your findings will contribute to the ongoing improvement of conservation strategies and help inform future projects.
- Cultural and Environmental Immersion: Immerse yourself in the local culture and appreciate your surrounding environment, gaining a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by coastal fishing communities. You’ll have the chance to participate in traditional activities, learn Swahili, and experience the natural beauty of the Kenyan coast, from its vibrant marine life to its rich cultural heritage. This experience is not just about work, but also about building connections and understanding the people and ecosystems you are working to protect.
