ORGANISATION

Khwela Womxn is on a mission to help South African women to boost their confidence and further their careers. They do this by providing experiential learning opportunities, leadership training, and peer-to-peer mentoring through their ‘Sisterhood Circles.’ These projects are a response to high unemployment rates in South Africa, especially amongst women, and a lack of learning opportunities.

Khwela, which means ‘to climb’ in isiXhosa, one of South Africa’s languages, was created in 2017, initially with the mission of giving local women access to jobs in the tourism industry. And it was instantly successful; in the first two years, 80% of the participants went from being unemployed to having a job in tourism. When the Covid pandemic hit, the Khwela Womxn team decided to expand beyond tourism, and design a program that creates opportunities for women in a wide range of job markets.

The result is a powerful platform for women to develop their skills, and turn into the leaders their communities need.
