Remote Grant Writing Internship

Gain practical work experience during an online grant writing internship. You’ll be part of a consultancy agency that offers strategic fundraising advice and services to nonprofit organizations. As an intern, you’ll be researching funding opportunities and writing grant proposals to trusts, foundations, and other grant-making organisations. You’ll do this on behalf of South African based clients; all nonprofits that run social impact programs.

As a grant writing intern, you’ll be part of Katalyst Consulting, an American based company that provides comprehensive grant writing services for nonprofit organizations across all sectors. Katalyst helps nonprofits identify and approach prospective funders, cultivate meaningful partnerships, and prepare grant submissions. Their ultimate goal is to help nonprofits do what they do best; effect change.

Your work will be focused on the South African based nonprofit clients. These are the current clients;

Thanda is a nonprofit organization based in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa that aims to provide holistic support for children and families. Their core programmes are centred around Early Learning, Education and Organic Farming. Thanda’s mission is to Empower People to Create Positive Change.

Education Africa is a well-established nonprofit organisation based in Johannesburg, South Africa. The organisation was founded in 1992 by visionary social entrepreneur, James Urdang, with the gracious support of such historic political heroes as Walter Sisulu and Nelson Mandela. Through a multitude of programmes that span multiple provinces, Education Africa aims to achieve Poverty Alleviation through Education.

Siyabonga ECD Centre is a small yet dedicated nonprofit organisation sparked by the unmistakable needs of vulnerable children in Mtubatuba, South Africa. As the only creche within two hours walking-distance, Siyabonga provides critically needed support for children in the area.

Holy Cross Hospice aims to ensure the highest possible quality of life for individuals facing a life-threatening illness and their families. The organisation works in rural areas of the uMlalazi and uMhlathuze municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and provides hospice and home-based care, bereavement support, natural family planning services, early childhood education, youth mentorship, and more. Holy Cross Hospice’s services have always been, and continue to be, available to anyone in need without discrimination.

TASKS & REQUIREMENTS
What you’ll do

 

As a grant writing intern, you will be involved in the full process of fundraising for different nonprofit organizations. This will include the following tasks;

  • Researching grants and other fundraising opportunities
  • Structuring and writing grant application and other funding proposals
  • Creating budgets for grant applications
  • Reaching out to nonprofit organisations that are potential clients
Requirements
  • Strong writing skills and fluency in English
  • An ability to work independently
  • Detail-oriented
  • Strong research skills
  • A self-starter attitude
  • Experience in creative writing is a bonus
  • An interest in the nonprofit sector

As this is a remote internship, you’ll have the flexibility to work from your own home!

Fixed fee USD 375

  • Regular check ins during your internship with you and your supervisor.

To help you optimise your personal and professional development during your internship, we offer individual monthly sessions with a professional consultant. These 1,5-hour sessions offer opportunities to set goals, reflect on your experience, and ensure your internship will benefit your career as much as possible.

Workshop: Exploring the Nonprofit Landscape
To give you a full understanding of the nonprofit sector in Africa, we offer one-off individual online workshops by a South African digital marketing and fundraising specialist. You’ll learn about the needs of the nonprofit sector, best practices in nonprofit management, and sustainability of fundraising initiatives. You’ll also be given a large amount of useful resources.
