It’s a powerful initiative with a high success rate.

Hlumelelisa is a nonprofit that offers horticulture training in prisons and to youth-at-risk in Johannesburg, South Africa. The organisation’s mission is to equip people with horticultural, entrepreneurial, and life skills so that they have an increased chance of finding work and becoming fully reintegrated in the community after their release. In addition, the projects help to create a greener, safer, more beautiful South Africa.
Hlumelelisa has chosen horticulture as our catalyst for transformation because a very substantial body of scientific evidence shows that immersion in nature has a positive impact on people’s well being. Moreover, horticultural skills are scarce and therefore useful skills to have in South Africa. Through a 10-month accredited course, Hlumelelisa teaches offenders the relevant skills to become a successful employee or even entrepreneur in the horticulture field, thus diverting them from turning again to crime as a means to survive.

The organisation was founded in 2003 and has, to date, offered courses to 735 people. It’s now looking at expanding its reach beyond Johannesburg, and putting together sustainable and scalable systems and programs.

As an intern, you’ll also be working with Digital Butter, a digital marketing agency based in Johannesburg that offers pro bono work to grassroots nonprofits. As Digital Butter assists Hlumelelisa with their overall communications and fundraising strategies, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with them and tap into their expertise.

I don't think I would ever done this without the help of an organisation like Roots. It is handy that they help you find the right internship, good accommodation and keep in touch with you during the time here to see if everything is fine. My parents where very glad as well that I did it with an organisation. I think I wouldn't have made the effort to find out everything by myself. So if I didn't find out about Roots, I wouldn't be here at all.
