Support a community-focused nonprofit through donor research, grant writing, and partnership outreach, with onsite, hybrid, and remote opportunities available.
Nonprofits rely on sustainable funding and strong partnerships to keep their programs running. This internship gives you real experience in both. You’ll contribute to donor research, grant writing, crowdfunding campaigns, and partnership outreach for an organization working with ultra-poor communities in Mombasa, Kenya. The work is practical, the output is tangible, and the skills you build transfer directly to careers in the nonprofit sector, marketing, and international development.
This is one of the most flexible internships in the Roots portfolio. It’s available fully onsite in Mombasa, as a hybrid placement, or fully remote. Interns who choose to come to Kenya will find a city full of energy and history, with Swahili architecture, vibrant markets, and the Indian Ocean all within easy reach on weekends.

ORGANIZATION
This nonprofit works in ultra-poor rural villages, drylands, and urban slums across Eastern Africa. Since its founding, it has focused on communities where the absence of water, food, and opportunity has pushed young people away from home in search of work. Through community-designed, community-led, and community-owned projects, it supports critical issues such as informal enterprise growth, limited access to education, and land degradation, aiming to equip vulnerable groups with the tools to earn, learn, and farm sustainably. Every project is anchored to a UN Sustainable Development Goal and built to continue after outside support ends. The organization serves some of the most marginalized groups, including family farmers, out-of-school youth, women entrepreneurs, people living with disabilities, and refugees, working to drive long-term change at both community and systemic levels.
TASKS & REQUIreMENTS
Your tasks will be tailored to your skills and the organization’s current priorities. Work may shift between fundraising and partnerships depending on your background and the program’s needs at the time.
What You’ll Do
- Research potential donors, grant-makers, and funding opportunities
- Write and support the development of grant proposals and funding applications
- Assist with crowdfunding campaigns and social media fundraising
- Research and identify potential partner organizations and community groups
- Contact and build relationships with prospective partners on behalf of the organization
- Support the development of outreach materials and partner communications
- Contribute to fundraising strategy and campaign planning where relevant
If you want to contribute more indirectly to the organization’s fundraising efforts then you can focus your internship on the media and communications (photography, content creation for social media, blog and newsletters)
Requirements
- Studying or recently graduated in any field, though Marketing, Communications, Nonprofit Management, Social Work, and Business are particularly relevant backgrounds for this role.
- Strong written English
- Self-motivated and able to work independently in a remote or hybrid setting
- Good research skills and attention to detail
- Genuine interest in nonprofit fundraising, international development, or community work
- No prior fundraising experience needed
WHERE YOU’LL STAY
During your placement you will stay in a shared bunk bed room (2 pax) in a homestay. The neighborhood is home to both Christian and Muslim families, who look out for one another. Your host family has been hosting interns and volunteers for more than 15 years and they speak Swahili and English. You’ll enjoy getting to know Kenyan culture and in your spare time can explore the beaches, wander through the historic town and enjoy local cuisine.

Make sure to visit your doctor and dentist for a check-up before your internship and to get all the recommended vaccines and/or medications necessary to stay healthy. The compound of your homestay has a wall around it, a locked main gate, lock for the main door, and a locking door for your own room. There are also two (friendly) dogs to help keep the place secure. Your host family lives on the compound and is ready to help, in person or by phone, any time. For your safety, please use the motorbikes, tuk-tuks, or taxis that your host family recommends or shows you.

You’ll be able to use your phone in Kenya with roaming data turned on, global e-sim card or a local SIM card if your phone is unlocked. Both the homestay and office have 24-hour Wi-Fi, and you can purchase bundles while out of the home and office.

At your homestay three fresh local meals are offered together with the host in the living room. In addition, the kitchen is open for you to cook your own meals at any time, at no extra cost beyond your own ingredients. Make sure to notify us in advance of any allergies/dietary needs.

In your free time, you can unwind on beautiful beaches, explore the historic streets of Old Town and Fort Jesus, snorkel or dive in the Indian Ocean, and enjoy vibrant local markets and coastal cuisine. Whether you’re chasing sunsets, wildlife, or weekend adventures, Mombasa has plenty to make your internship experience unforgettable.

- An academic internship eligible for university credit. Check with your university to confirm if this internship qualifies for credit or alternatively we can assist you with purchasing transfer credits.

Regrettably, internships with nonprofit organizations are unpaid; however, there are various avenues to secure funding for your internship.
