If you’re interested in ethical consumerism and you’d like to gain some practical work experience in this field, this could be a great opportunity for you! This internship is with The Good Food Network, a South African initiative that is on a mission to promote and empower local producers of organic food in South Africa’s Western Cape. As an intern, you’ll have the chance to contribute to this cause through a variety of research projects.

As part of a small and dedicated team, you’ll help assess the potential and actual impact that a decentralized and organic food system can have on both the local environment and on the socio-economic conditions in the Cape Town area. Through both field research and data analysis, you’ll help put the organization’s mission in a framework of tangible evidence, which will in turn help with the future strategy.

This internship is an excellent opportunity to use your analytical skills for an important cause, make a tangible contribution to the food system that The Good Food Network envisions, and to gain valuable experience in research. It’s also an opportunity to spend some time living in Cape Town, one of the most beautiful places in the world!

The Good Food Network is an online hub that promotes and encourages locally grown organic food. The organization’s goal is to create a central space where local growers can tell their story and anyone interested in sourcing ethical and healthy food can find relevant information and resources. It’s ultimately a way to create a good food ecosystem; The Good Food Network aims to connect farmers, nonprofits, and small businesses that are producing organic food with local restaurants, stores, and individuals looking to support local growers and buy non-toxic, healthy food.

What you’ll do

As an intern, you’ll enjoy a variety of tasks, which – depending on your skills and experience – can include;

  • Researching the environmental and economical impact of local and ethical food systems in Cape Town and its surrounding areas
  • Doing data analysis related to decentralized food production
  • Doing market research
  • Possibly writing content around the topics you’re researching
  • Assisting with website management / development, if you’re interested
  • Excellent research and data analysis skills
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • A curious and pro-active attitude
  • An interest sustainable food production / ethical consumerism
  • An ability to work quite independently
  • A willingness to take on a variety of tasks

You can either join this internship remotely, or join the team in Cape Town, South Africa. If you venture to Cape Town, you’ll be staying at a volunteer house called Yoga Shala, a house in Capri, on Cape Town’s Southern Peninsula. It’s a shared house where people from around the world stay while interning or volunteering in the surrounding communities. Everyone at the house plays a role and assists in the general day to day operation of Yoga Shala, from the kitchen to gardening and cleaning, which creates a great community in the house. You’ll be surrounded by beaches and mountains, and Cape Town’s city center is a 40-minute drive away.


You can start your internship with this organization every week. Please keep in mind this organization is closed for several weeks of summer holiday at the end of the year.

To give you a full understanding of the nonprofit sector in Africa, we offer one-off individual online workshops by a South African digital marketing and fundraising specialist. You’ll learn about the needs of the nonprofit sector, best practices in nonprofit management, and sustainability of fundraising initiatives. You’ll also be given a large amount of useful resources.
