Greenpop
Greenpop is a Cape Town based environmental NGO that is growing a Treevolution – a world where people and nature thrive together!
Greenpop was founded as a social enterprise in 2010. In 2014, the organisation adopted a ‘hybrid’ model, splitting off the events management aspects of the organisation and registering the Greenpop Foundation as a Non-Profit Organisation to run their environmental programmes. Both entities work together to reconnect people and the planet through planting trees, greening communities and empowering environmental stewards and active citizens across Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Their urban greening projects concentrate on planting fynbos gardens and trees in urban spaces and run school-based eco-education workshops.
- Their forest restoration programme plants trees, clears alien vegetation, and works with communities to protect indigenous forests.
- They also run sustainable development and environmental art projects on an ad hoc basis – these give communities tools to improve their lives while effectively managing their natural resources and create public art and music which brings awareness to local environmental issues.
- Greenpop’s events are experiential and educational – they run interactive educational workshops on a variety of environmental, entrepreneurial and leadership topics for school groups, corporate teams and the general public. They aim to equip people with the skills they need to get active (not anxious) about the future of our planet.
And they do it with a difference; they make it fun, accessible, and valuable for everyone involved. While planting trees is an important and very beneficial activity, Greenpop believes that unless communities are actively involved in and incentivised by the process, no lasting environmental change is possible. To date, Greenpop has planted over 115,000 trees – and activated thousands of people in the process.
