It was not only an Event Management Internship, it was a life experience!
Hello future interns (or that is what I hope you will be), my name is Alessandra, I am 21 years old and I study Economics and Management in Milan, Italy. I came to South Africa highly motivated to be immersed in different cultures and ideas that could blow my mind. I came across Roots Interns through my university. They helped me find the most suitable internship for me. I had some experience organizing region-wide competitions and away-games transfers for my synchronized swimming team. Therefore, I wanted to extend my knowledge in this field. So, I did an Event Management Internship in Cape Town with Greenpop.
I decided to do my internship at an NGO and not in a for-profit organization because I believe that humans’ biggest motivations come from doing something that can make an impact. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” When my flight took off from Malpensa airport, I felt so excited and nervous at the same time… I didn’t know exactly what to expect from this experience and what kind of people would welcome me to this new adventure. Fortunately, after twelve hours on the plane, I was driven to my accommodation where I met my flatmates, colleagues and, in the end, best friends during my stay.
When I arrived in Cape Town, I was immediately working on-ground for a hectic music festival Greenpop was doing the last run-up for: Rocking the Daisies. We set up the Green Village to make it look amazing for the 25 thousand people attending the festival. We worked really hard for this purpose and seeing everything done we felt so satisfied! I had the opportunity to manage backstage, to meet local artists and singers, and to enjoy my time there. At first, it was difficult for me to settle at the campsite and sometimes I felt discouraged. On the other hand, what led me to South Africa was that I wanted to step out of my comfort zone. I found out that the experience at the Daisies strengthened me from this point of view.
Coming back to the Greenpop office in Cape Town, my supervisor Carla gave me tasks relating to my studies. I had to develop budgets and proposals, planned meetings and did marketing research. However, I felt particularly proud of myself when I started helping Misha and Carla find agents to offer a faculty-led trip and actually arranged meetings with them. I worked on my own and in a team. The atmosphere of the office made me feel really comfortable whatever I was doing. I have definitely improved my management & organization skills, and achieved challenging tasks.
Now, I am looking back at my Cape Town stay. I am grateful to all the people that I have met because I have learned a lot from all of them. There are no right words to describe this Event Management internship in Cape Town. It was not only an internship, but it was also a life experience.
