Photography Internships in Africa

If you’re a photography student looking to gain experience, or if you’re a photography enthusiast keen to improve your skills and build a portfolio, our photography internships in South Africa could be a great opportunity for you! Based in the Greater Kruger National Park, our wildlife photography internship allows you to document the wealth of amazing wildlife in the area, including the African Big Five.

In Cape Town, we offer photography internships of a slightly different nature. Here, you can join an environmental photography internship with an exciting urban greening and eco-education project. Or, if you’re more interested in cultural and humanitarian photography, you can photograph the work of social impact projects in and around the city during a nonprofit photography internship or volunteer program. Either way, you won’t be short of inspiring and unique photographic opportunities!

All photography internship programs are guided by professional photographers, who will help you make the most out of the experience. It’s a great way to learn new skills or sharpen old ones.

FAQs ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY INTERNSHIPS IN AFRICA

How experienced do I need to be to join a photography internship?

It depends on the specific internship program; some require more experience than others. But we do offer something for photographers of all levels. So whether you’re an absolute beginner, an experienced amateur, or a professional looking to expand your horizons, we can offer you a photography internship that will suit your level and goals.

Who is a photography internship for?

Our photography internships can be a great opportunity if you’re a photography student, if you’re at the start of a photography career, or if you’d like to explore a different focus with your photography. You’ll have the chance to work towards your own individual goals during your internship, which means you can make it work for your unique situation.

What is the difference between the photography internship and the photography volunteer project in Cape Town?

Good question! The two programs do overlap to a degree, as they are set in the same location and focused on nonprofit photography, but there are some differences as well. The photography volunteer project starts with a one-week workshop and has a set structure. The internship, on the other hand, is designed for each individual intern, so it’s less structured. We require more experience from interns, as you’ll be expected to work more independently, and with less supervision and guidance. For a full overview of the differences between the two programs, check out this blog post. And if you’re not sure which program suits you best, just get in touch, and we’ll figure it out together!

What can I expect to learn as a photography intern?

A lot! You’ll have the pleasure of being tutored by a professional photographer, who will help you sharpen your skills on all levels. All our photography internships in South Africa are customised, which ensures that you’ll be working on your own level and towards your own goals.

What about accommodation?

We’ve got you covered! When you join us as a photography intern, we’ll arrange your accommodation for you. Depending on the internship you’re opting for, you’ll stay at a lodge, a volunteer house, or a shared apartment. Either way, we’ll make sure you’ll have a comfortable, safe, and affordable place to stay. We’ll also provide airport transfers, and any daily transportation you might need during your stay.

How will a photography internship help my career?

A photography internship can help kickstart your career as a photographer in a number of ways. First of all, you’ll get to hone your photography skills through tutoring from a professional photographer. The tutoring will be on an individual level, so you can focus on any gaps in your knowledge, and work on your own level. Second of all, you’ll get to build a portfolio of images. Throughout your stay in South Africa, you’ll be given unique and incredible photographic opportunities; whether it’s with wildlife or with nonprofit field work. You can expect to come home with an exciting collection of images that you’ll be able to use to promote your photography. Third of all, by working with a professional photographer, you’ll get to learn about photography as a profession; what it takes to make it, how to market yourself, and what paid shoots are like.

Why is South Africa a great destination for a photography internship?

Where do we start? South Africa is a striking country, and photogenic in so many ways. If it’s wildlife photography you’re interested in, it really doesn’t get much better than spending time in the African bush, and photographing animals such lions, elephants, and giraffes on a daily basis. If you’re interested in nonprofit photography, South Africa offers ideal opportunities as well, as there’s a diverse nonprofit sector throughout the country. Many field based projects offer excellent opportunities for documentary style photography – and by donating the use of some of your images, you’ll be assisting vital causes at the same time.
