Internships with Chaska
Chaska, launched in 2018, is a scholarship program that delivers emotional, educational, and financial support to young girls from very poor families living in Peru’s south-easterly city of Cusco. Its main aim is to help the girls build the skills and tools that will give them the best chance to live independent, happy and successful lives.
Each year, Chaska interviews around 600 girls at public schools, looking at factors such as motivation and personality which, in comparison with traditional ‘intelligence’ tests, are recognized as having a far greater impact on their future success. There are currently nineteen girls enrolled in the program, with the aim of adding five to ten more girls each year. The girls go to the center every weekday afternoon, where they are given a nutritious lunch, attend additional classes and get help with their homework. They also join workshops led by Chaska’s teachers that address different social issues, including teenage pregnancy, bullying, addiction, and low self-esteem.
