After traveling and working on an eco-village in South America for one year, Janna Kretzmar arrived back in Cape Town at the beginning of 2006 with her heart set on one thing – to find a way to transform our schools. The mission of this non-profit organization is to create sustainable and meaningful change through the practice of yoga and meditation, enviro-education and leadership training. Earthchild Project works within the existing school structures, by placing Earthchild Project coordinators in schools to introduce and maintain our programs. They are supported by the teachers, parents and volunteers. The programs Earthchild Project creates complement the academic curriculum helping to develop practical skills for healthy and holistic living, such as stress management techniques or permaculture to use at school and in their lives.

Main projects

  • Living classrooms: existing classrooms are turned into ‘living’ interactive learning environments for yoga, environmental education and life skills.
  • After school clubs: these clubs are an opportunity for the organization to work with smaller groups of mixed age children. For example Yoga Club and the Eco-Warrior Club.
  • Hiking club: how can children love nature if they have never experienced it? The hiking club is an opportunity for children to respect, love and connect to our earth.
  • Holiday program: each year Earthchild Project selects 20 young leaders in Grade 7 from their two focus schools to attend a week Holiday Programme in April and June.
  • Teachers Conventions: teachers play an important role in the lives of our children. Their task is to impart knowledge, as well as support, inspire and be a positive role model.
  • Alumni program: Earthchild Project continues to work with the Earthchildren who have graduated to High School by furthering their skills and experience through training and guidance.

They are currently active in schools in Khayelitsha and Lavender Hill, facilitating over 2,000 children. Their office is based in Muizenberg, a sea-side suburb in Cape Town.

“My tasks have gone from high to low.  I have been able to work very independently during this Content Creation Internship, which suits me very well. Since it is a small organisation, there is little time for micro-managing interns so if you are a person who is good at taking charge and independently executing your tasks, this is the perfect place for you!”
Amanda Norrlander, Sweden, Content Creation Internship
